Act

The Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Act, 2022 – Beneficial Ownership

This short amending Act brings cooperatives into Uganda's beneficial-ownership transparency rules. It adds a definition of "beneficial owner", meaning the natural person who ultimately owns or controls a society or on whose behalf a transaction is carried out. It also requires every cooperative society to keep a register of its beneficial owners, and lets the Minister make regulations to put these provisions into effect. Secretaries and SACCO compliance officers will need it, because it ties cooperative record-keeping to anti-money-laundering and Financial Action Task Force expectations.
